Ring Type Joints
Ring Type Joints (RTJs) are specialised gaskets, widely used by the Oil, Gas, Petrochemical and Offshore Industries in applications subject to high pressures and temperatures. They are designed to be used with grooved flanges, and create a seal that is very strong and reliable, resistant to chemical corrosion and withstanding extremely high pressure and temperatures up to 1000°C.
Ring Type joints are designed to concentrate the bolt load over a small area thus producing high seating stresses. As the ring type material should always be softer than the mating flanges, the high seating stress causes ‘plastic-flow’ of the ring joint in the flange faces, creating the seal.
There are different shapes and models of RTJ available, including oval and octagonal. Choosing the right ring type joint depends on a number of factors based on the application, the flange it needs to fit into, and the type of metal to create a solid seal for the job in hand.
